Grinding Brakes was created by Mitbfd
My 9 month old asx is having problems with its brakes. For a few weeks while setting off first thing in the morning or other times it's be stood still for a long time the brakes grind. I thought it was just the cold winter we have been having causing the problem but past week it's been warmer but brakes still grind. Emailed the dealer tonight and will see what they say.

Sounds as if the Hand Brake mechanism maybe sticking on. There have been one or two post about this problem with a swivel pin seizing up in the rear brake mechanism due to water ingress, which when the Handbrake is released does not allow the brake to fully release.
May be worth taking the car into the dealership for them to check it over.
If this is the fault and as your car is still under warranty, it should not cost you anything for it to be rectified.

See Post 2 down regarding a seized Handbrake. You may have the same issue.

Dealer rang today and said it might be a stone causing the problem, going in after work tomorrow to sort it out.

Sorry for the late update. When I set of to work in the morning the grinding noise was heard, when I finished work I set of to the dealer and no grinding noise... surprise surprise. The car was taken for a drive and wheels were taken off but garage couldn't find a problem. Felt a bit of a Wally but least I know the brakes are ok.
